Horses is a main source of income for many nomads in Kazakhstan, which makes these animals vulnerable to thievery. A horse thief is an ancient "profession" and is still being practiced. After a horse is stolen it can be moved a few hundred kilometers from its home before it is sold, often in Kyrgyzstan.
