Aktau mountains are colorful chalky hills, formed from bluish-gray sandstone and red clay, interspersed with yellow and pink cornelian, jasper and white quartz, reminiscent of a layer cake. Aktau (meaning "White Mountain" in Kazakh) is also one of the largest paleontology sites in the word. Some of the discoveries were rhinos, crocodiles, and turtles that inhabited the area 30 million years ago.
