When there are several months of no sun and a need in heating whole year round, a city needs a lot of electricity. Today, Longyearbyen obtains it from its coal power plant, which produces annual emissions of 40 tonnes of CO2 per inhabitant, four times as much as on mainland. For that reason there are plans to build a completely green hydrogen-fuelled power station in Svalbard.
