Yurts - traditional homes of Nomads of Kazakhstan

Yurts - round tents covered with skins or felt - are still widely used by Nomads in Central Asia. They have a profound meaning to the people of the region. For instance, an Emblem of Kazakhstan - is the Crown of the Yurt (the top central part of the roof) called Shanyrak. The yurt itself would often be repaired and rebuilt, but the Shanyrak would remain intact, passed from father to son upon the father's death. A family's length of heritage could be measured by the accumulation of stains on the Shanyrak from decades of smoke passing through it.
