This mine was in operation in 1913–1964. Today it is a heritage site. Residents of Longyearbyen call it "Julenissegruva" (The Santa Mine). The children in Longyearbyen are told that Santa resides in this mine, so every Christmas they write their presents' wish list for Santa and put it in a mailbox on the road below the mine.
In winter, the bravest tourists climb the mountain to see the mine up close, you can observe some of them on the image above, represented by the blue torch lights below the mine.
